"Giving hope through skills development"

Our story

Behind the walls of seemingly nondescript factory premises situated in Knysna's Industria, a passionate group of people is bringing about a remarkable wave of positive change for a number of young men and women from Knysna's more disadvantaged communities. Named “HopeHQ“ (Headquartersof Hope), this is where a combination of faith, dedication and a big dose of love is bringing a brighter future for many.

The Hands & Heart initiative was launched back in February 2014 with the aim of empowering, developing and uplifting young men in the Knysna community. As part of the curriculum during this one year course, students are taught woodworking as a trade skill.

The Ithemba Craft & Skills Centre focuses around the upliftment of women. 'Ithemba' means hope in Xhosa, which is exactly what this initiative is designed to do – give hope to women in the Knysna Community. There are several programmes on offer, including courses in sewing and basic computer skills.

All the students taking part in these programmes are also taught basic computer and business acumen skills as well as other essential tools needed to enter the workplace or start their own business.

HopeHQ is also partnering with KILT (Knysna Initiative for Learning and Teaching) and runs after school study clubs on their behalf in 13 schools in the greater Knysna area.

Our vision

These programmes seek to holistically empower, uplift and develop young men and women from vulnerable and disadvantaged communities.

Both practical and life skills are imparted to students, equipping them with the essential tools to enter the workplace or start their own businesses. Students are encouraged and assisted to develop their full potential and also to seize both employment and personal growth opportunities.

The programmes promote emotional and spiritual development through social communications, leadership training, self-development and problem solving skills. Entrepreneurial skills training focus on enabling the students to learn the skills to start and run their own businesses.

When products made at the skills’ centres are sold as part of an income-generating strategy, each student receives a portion of the funds. The rest of the funds are invested back into the programme for materials and equipment.

Starting this year with a bang, feels like an appropriate introduction into how YFC-Knysna started this year. We are grateful for every opportunity that has come so far and I know in my heart there will be many more opportunities to minister and to serve.

I found a quote on Pinterest.... yes us Christians go on Pinterest too, lol. The quote is as follows: “Your dreams should be so big, that without God, they are impossible to achieve.” Dear friends, please indulge me for a moment as I share with you the MASSIVE dream we had and how our MIRACLE WORKING GOD did what only He can do best.

This month has really reminded me of the importance of family, more specifically, a Godly family. At the end of last month we said goodbye to a very anointed prayer warrior, who has been supporting YFC even before I started my journey with YFC. What struck me at Ma Rita Borcherds’ Celebration service, was the hope and strength her children had demonstrated.

We’ve been down this road before, trying to find new and innovative ways to continue ministry even though we are placed under level 4 restrictions once again. "How do we continue ministry in the communities, with the thought of a third wave of Covid-19 well underway and it is said to be more contagious?"

June is always a very exciting time of the year for me. It is not only the month of the year in which the days start getting longer and I start preparing myself for summer to be around the corner - It is also the month of the year during which the Springboks had beaten the All Blacks in our first rugby world cup victory..

April was yet another month where we experienced God’s love for us in what we are doing here at HopeHQ. All our students at Hands & Heart are back (in full force) getting to know the basics of carpentry. Our new students at iThemba excitedly started their various courses with us as well.

It is with huge gratitude that we can, yet again, look back and give God the honour and glory for His care and love for us. This month has been a month of meetings: apart from our regular leadership, staff, project committee and financial committee meetings etc.
